Job Description

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the City Solicitor, undertakes a variety of work appropriate to the office of summer law intern. The law student will assist the City Solicitor, Deputy City Solicitor, and the Municipal Prosecutor in all legal matters.  

 

Major responsibilities:

  1. Drafts agreements, Corporate reports, and Municipal by-laws under the direction of the Solicitors.
  2. Undertakes legal research and responds, under direction of the Solicitors, to legal questions of Municipal staff relating to a wide variety of Municipal undertakings and activities.
  3. Assists with preparation of court and tribunal materials.
  4. Attends at meetings of Council and Committees of Council, when required.
  5. Performs other duties as requested from time to time.
  6. Catalogues and updates library material.
  7. Catalogues and updates precedent banks.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Experience:

  • Must be enrolled in a post-graduate degree in law (L.L.B./J.D.)

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills (courtroom experience an asset)
  • Effective oral and written communication ability
  • Legal research and writing skills
  • Ability to listen, learn and take direction

Conditions of Employment:
