    Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the general supervision of the Plant Superintendent and the direct supervision of the Chief Operator, operates, regulates, monitors and adjusts various pumps, machines and equipment controls to assure efficient operation of the Water Pollution Control Plant and sewage lift stations.

     

    MAJOR TASKS:

    1. Performs routine inspections of all plants and equipment, buildings and site, as outlined by the plant inspection schedule, and reports deficiencies.
    2. Reads, monitors, and records charts and meter readings, prepares process calculations, and assists with input of process statistics in plant computer.
    3. Adjusts chlorinator feed to ensure correct chlorine residual is maintained in the effluent.
    4. Performs routine duties such as cleaning, scum removal, servicing pumps and related plant operational functions.
    5. Performs service, duty, and sludge dewatering operations as scheduled.
    6. Collects process samples and performs analytical tests for all operational parameters.
    7. Ensures the security of the plant and property by locking all doors, windows, and gates, as required by established directives.
    8. Reports, and documents in the plant log, all unusual operating conditions and equipment in need of servicing.
    9. Performs and assists with confined space entries, and uses self-contained breathing apparatus, as required.
    10. Assists the Maintenance staff as required.
    11. Receives and assists in the unloading of plant chemicals.
    12. Actively participates in a team work environment.
    13. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:       

     

    Education/Experience:

    • Must possess 2 years post-secondary education or 90 continuing education credits in a field deemed appropriate by the Ministry of the Environment

    Skills/Abilities:

    • Must possess and be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance as well as basic mathematics and chemistry
    • Must possess computer skills
    • Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions
    • Must be tactful and courteous with the public
    • Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s licence and be able to attain City Driver Certification
    • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:        

    • Prior to an offer of employment, must successfully write and pass an OIT examination and be eligible to attain a Waste Water Operator Licence for waste water collection facilities and waste water treatment facilities
    • Within 18 months of hire, must attain and maintain a Class 1 Waste Water Operator Licence for waste water collection facilities and waste water treatment facilities
    • Within 3 years of hire, must attain and maintain a Class II Waste Water Operator Licence for waste water collection facilities and waste water treatment facilities
    • Within 4 years of hire, must attain and maintain a Class III Waste Water Operator Licence for waste water collection facilities and waste water treatment facilities
    • Within 5 years of hire, must attain and maintain a Class IV Waste Water Operator Licence for waste water collection facilities and waste water treatment facilities
    • Must maintain the level of the waste water collection facility and the waste water treatment facility
    • Must be physically capable to perform the duties of the job and be willing to work weekends and shifts as required
    • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and with sewage
    • Must attain a First Aid Certificate
    • Must undergo a successful police records check, Type 1
