    Job Description

    Position Summary:

     

    Under the direction, coordination and supervision of the Coordinator – Crime Prevention Council (or designate) and Coordinator – Thunder Bay Drug Strategy (or designate) the Ambassadors will implement community safety activities within the South Core neighbourhood and other neighbourhoods, as required.

     

    Major Responsibilities:

    1. Promote neighbourhood safety & well-being
    2. Pick up garbage, including drug-related litter
    3. Provide education to the general public on community safety
    4. Engage with local businesses to increase community safety
    5. Identify current and/or emerging community safety issues
    6. Report incidents of graffiti
    7. Compile community safety data
    8. Utilize computer programs (Word and Excel) to input data related to community safety efforts
    9. Support the work of the South Core Public Safety Task Force and the Thunder Bay Drug
    10. Strategy Harm Reduction Working Group
    11. Support safety & well-being initiatives of local service organizations
    12. Perform such other related duties as required

    Qualifications:

     

    Education:

    • College or University level coursework in social sciences, community safety.

    Skills & Abilities:

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Knowledge of social issues relating to poverty, homelessness, substance use, mental health, marginalization
    • Knowledge of harm reduction and related strategies
    • Understanding of the social determinants of health
    • Ability to work with the public in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner
    • Highly motivated and able to work well in a team environment
    • Must be a self-starter who is able to work with minimal supervision
    • Must be physically capable of performing required duties
    • Must have a working knowledge of computers

    Physical Demands:

    • This position requires constant standing/walking; frequent squatting/kneeling, and lifting

    Assets:

    • Knowledge of Municipal By-laws related to Property Standards
    • Knowledge of the South Core street system, and awareness of Thunder Bay neighbourhoods
    • Certificate in standard first aid and CPR

    Conditions of Employment:

    • Must be able to work some evenings and weekend shifts for special events
