Deputy Chief – EMS Professional Standards

 

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief of EMS, you will be responsible for the direct oversight of the Community Paramedicine Program, regulatory compliance, recruitment, and education initiatives. The Deputy Chief will assist in all aspects of service delivery including strategic planning, provision of education, training, quality assurance, resource allocations, public media relations and liaising with Municipal Councils, Hospitals and other Emergency Service providers. 

 

Some of the accountabilities for this role are:

  • Develops an oversight model to manage training program delivery in accordance with the Ambulance Act, regulations and Corporate policies.
  • Provides training to paramedics, emergency medical attendants, service instructors, volunteers, and first response teams as required.
  • Develop strategy to monitor the performance of staff to ensure that a high level of patient care is maintained.
  • Develops the District training strategy, which will ensure the ongoing existence of a skilled and knowledgeable work force, consistent with industry standards and applicable legislation.
  • Assesses Section staffing needs, makes recommendations on complement amendments and organizational structure, participates in recruitment processes, and makes effective hiring decisions.
  • Supervises Commanders and Superintendents, including staff development, performance management/review, coaching/mentoring, health and safety, and discipline and termination decisions.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Degree in health, public service, business administration, management or other related discipline together with five years related experience; or
  • Diploma in health, public service, business administration, management or other related discipline together with seven years related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of Land Ambulance legislation, regulations, and current practices pertaining to training and quality assurance issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of the points of interaction and critical interface within the health care system.
  • Previous experience with Community Paramedicine programs, regulatory compliance, adult education, and emergency first responder recruitment.
  • Minimum of 5 years front line paramedic supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Superior ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with members of Municipalities, private and public officials, hospitals, Ministry of Health, subordinates, coworkers, and the general public.
